The objectives of this course are to give general information about the admixtures for concrete. More specifically, the course aims to provide students with the knowledge of various properties, their mechanisms of action, their effects on fresh and hardened concrete and relevant ASTM and Turkish specifications about air-entraining admixtures, chemical admixtures, mineral admixtures and miscellaneous admixtures.
Concrete properties and use of admixtures; Considerations and precautions in the use of admixtures; Classification of admixtures; Air-entraining admixtures; Water-reducing admixtures; Set Retarders; Accelerators; Pozzolans and other finely divided mineral admixtures; Natural pozzolans; Fly ashes; Silica fumes; Ground granulated blast furnace slags; Miscellaneous admixtures. Properties, standart testing methods and the effects of the above admixtures on the properties of concrete.
At the end of the course, the learner is expected to be able to decide which admixture to use for different purposes and to be aware of which properties other than his/her main purpose can be affected by the usage of the admixture.
