Course Objective

The objectives of this course are to enable the students: (i)to understand the importance of uncertainties and the resulting risks in civil engineering problems and (ii)to utlize the basic concepts of decision and utility theory in comparing different alternatives.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the student is expected: 1) to have a full understanding of the uncertainties involved in engineering problems and the resulting risks; 2) to utilize different statistical and probabilistic methods for the modelling, analysis and updating of uncertainties; 3)to be able to model different alternatives in a systematic way and identify the optimal alternative by running a cost benefit analysis; 4)to be able to model different engineering problems involving random variations in space and time.
